Many dog owners work full time outside of the home. This means that their dogs are often left alone at home for a good chunk of the day. Unfortunately, this cannot be avoided in many cases, but there are some basic guidelines to follow, that will ensure your pet's safety, while you are away from home.
Firstly, make sure that your dog has enough water and food for the day. Your dog should be fed on a daily schedule, but he should have as much fresh water as he needs - and you may not be there to refresh the bowl, so dog waterers are a great idea. These waterers act, in essence, as water fountains - they continuously supply water to the bowl as needed and this water is also purified - which means that your dog is getting fresh water every time! There is a nice variety to choose from for every dog size.
Secondly, make sure that your dog has a "comfortable" spot to nap on. This usually means a doggie bed or pillow that is usually left in the same "comfort" spot that your pet has adopted. If your dog likes to sleep on the couch or on your bed, consider buying him a doggie blanket - these are made of environmentally friendly fabric, which means they are non toxic to your pet, and can easily be cleaned.
Thirdly, make sure that your dog is always wearing its collar - particularly with pet identification. Should you dog somehow manage to find its way outside of your home, tracking down its owner (you) will be that much easier. In many cases, this can be done through your veterinarian or local city hall (because of the pet licenses).
If you dog goes out in the backyard for a chunk of the day, make sure that he has a comfortable dog house to sleep in - one that will keep him away from the elements - particularly a hot blazing sun. You can easily find dog houses for any type of weather and for any size dog.
Don't forget that your dog should also be "dressed" appropriately for the weather. If you live in an area where you get snow or cold for a good part of the year, consider purchasing a dog coat or jacket as well as dog boots - while your pet may fight you, at the beginning, if you continue to insist that they wear their apparel, they will quickly become accustomed to wearing it. Doggie boots are particularly important in the snow - the salt associated with the snow is very harsh on your dog's paws and can cause serious irritation.
Just a few guidelines for your healthy and happy dog.
